Celebrating Medical Laboratory Professionals’ Week 2014
In real life, it was an awesome surprise when Sally S. Cherry, BS, MT(ASCP) was contacted to be interviewed for the professional laboratory organization, American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP). As an ASCP-certified medical technologist, it is indeed a delight and honor for “us” to be interviewed and featured for the ASCP-ONElab‘s “inspiring stories from the lab”. It is so important that laboratory professionals share their stories. There may be a “shy high school student” or a “laboratorian feeling overworked, undercompensated, or unappreciated” trying to make a life-changing decision. It is my desire to share experiences and information about being a laboratory professional as my 10th grade high school biology teacher shared with me over 45 years ago. The “Power of One” goes a long way!
As I celebrate Medical Laboratory Professionals Week (MLPW) and acknowledge the ASCP-ONElab‘s recognition, I paused for a moment of silence in memory of my 10th grade high school biology teacher, Mrs. Carolyn Dorman who saw the “laboratorian” in a “shy” student at Worcester Jr-Sr High School (WHS) over 45 years ago. Now in 2014, the vision of a “not so shy” lab professional is to use the acquired knowledge, skills, connections, and experiences in laboratory science and public health to enhance access and delivery of disease control and prevention resources and services as well as laboratory career recruitment. It is this vision that fuels my current virtual-based projects pertaining to the integration of 3D virtual worlds into capacity building, training, networking, information-sharing, HIV/AIDS awareness, and lab career promotion activities.
There is No doubt… Laboratory science rocks in real life as well as virtual life! So, Medical Laboratory Professionals Week (MLPW) is being celebrated in real life and virtual-based labs. Feel free to join my avatar and virtual-based colleagues for the Open House at the Virtual Laboratory Training and Career (VLTC) Center (http://bit.ly/1k13MVw) from April 23 to May 31, 2014. The VLTC Center is located in the Community HIV/AIDS Resource Exchange (CHARE) Village (http://bit.ly/OdtCbn) within the Kitely community. It is open 24 hours a day!
